The University of Maine is partnering with Penquis to build nine 3D-printed homes in the Bangor area using wood sawmill waste. Designed to withstand Maine winters, the development aims to serve as a model for addressing homelessness.
The housing development will be the first in Maine constructed from wood sawmill waste.
The proposed project is a collaboration between the University of Maine’s Advanced Structures and Composite Center and Penquis. While not an exact replica, the homes will be similar to the first bio-based 3D-printed home the university unveiled in Orono in 2022.
Dr. Habib Dagher, executive director of the Advanced Structures and Composite Center at the University of Maine, said, “People were just jumping in the lab here, being excited that we can take the next step now. We’ve been preparing for it for a while. But we wanted to do our homework, too. So that’s why we wanted this house to have a few years on it. Make sure that we identify any issues, if we learn anything that’s important from it. And we learned a lot from this particular [home]. It’s done very well, but we’ve learned ways to do it better,” said Dr. Habib Dagher, executive director of the Advanced Structures and Composite Center at the University of Maine,
$4 million for the project from the federal government was announced. The money will fund the design and production of a community of nine homes, built using UMaine’s BioHome3D technology.
