Last November, Elected Officials to Protect America (EOPA) attended the international United Nations climate talks known as COP29 and gathered delegates together. This cohort was concerned with how a change in the American administration would affect global stability, knowing some of the progress made mitigating climate disasters could be eroded. We faced the fact that millions around the globe could suffer more from the devastation of a warming planet if actions from the Trump administration were successful in rolling back America’s climate progress. EOPA continues to fight for the continuation of these successful climate initiatives.

EOPA also had the opportunity to explain our Ukraine Energy Security Marshall Plan that would help the war-torn country build back its infrastructure with clean energy solutions, thereby diminishing the threat posed by autocratic Petro-states who rely on fossil fuels to stay in power.

The following is the EOPA and our COP29 delegation’s statement to the people of Ukraine of solidarity with Ukraine.

To the brave people of Ukraine:

You are the torch bearers representing democratic nations around the world. While Russian armies under the direction of Putin unjustly and unilaterally invaded your country, unleashing a full-scale war, you stood up, stood proud, and fought back. Pundits predicted your collapse. Thankfully, they have been proven wrong, and many of them have come to respect your unfattenable resilience, ingenuity, and steadfast belief in your sovereign nation. Far too many have died and been wounded. Far too many have been displaced. There has been far too much suffering by the hands of Putin.

We cannot imagine the day-to-day suffering inflicted upon innocents. Although we can never feel the anguish and trauma as you do, we want you to understand we are with you. Your pain is our pain. We stand with Ukraine.

Peace is always the end goal. A ceasefire without security guarantees is not peace. Any nation’s leader who has stated that Ukraine started the war should be condemned. We all witnessed the horror Putin’s armed forces inflicted and continue to do so. In fact, on the day of the peace talks at the White House, Putin had his Russian forces attack Kharkiv and Odesa, inflicting more trauma on innocent people. President Trump’s accusation stating that Ukraine started the war should never be swept under the carpet. With it he announced he could not be trusted.

When President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with President Trump, he did so for you and the world. He will always take peace negotiations seriously, even though he knows Trump falsely accused your nation. He believes in you, in your democracy and peace.

In President Zelenskyy’s statement released on March 1,2025 he wrote, ‘We want peace. That’s why I came to the United States and visited President Trump. The deal on minerals is just a first step toward security guarantees and getting closer to peace. Our situation is tough, but we can’t just stop fighting and not have guarantees that Putin will not return tomorrow.’

Your president is an example to the world of leadership under the worst conditions imaginable. He is defending you and, by doing so, all democratic nations who abide by the rule of law. We stand with Ukraine.

As Americans, we were ashamed and sickened to have witnessed our president and vice president insult your true democratic leader. President Zelenskyy listened with respect to President Trump and refused to be bullied into submission. There can be no peace without security guarantees. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) understands this basic humanitarian right – so do we – along with millions of freedom-loving Americans. We look forward to the day there is a negotiated peace deal that President Zelensky can accept with pride for all the people of Ukraine and the world.

In solidarity,

Alex Cornell du Houx
