Last week Maine State Police troopers issued dozens of warnings while stepping up enforcement of the state’s “move over” law.
The “move over” law requires drivers to move into the passing lane, if possible, or slow down when traveling by police cars, firetrucks, ambulances, tow trucks and other vehicles with flashing lights in the breakdown lane.
In all, police handed out 52 warnings during enforcement efforts on the Maine Turnpike. Troopers stepped up enforcement last week in York, and held another effort this week in Portland. The reason; it’s dangerous for public safety servants working on the shoulder of any road. Sixteen state police cruisers since 2003 have been struck by motorists while parked along roadways.
