Today the U.S. Coast Guard raised a wind turbine in Southwest Harbor, to power electricity for their housing. The event marks a yearlong effort by the U.S. Coast Guard to implement various clean energy initiatives.

Ocean Renewable Power Company’s 60-kilowatt tidal turbine is now providing electricity to the U.S.Coast Guard Eastport station’s 41-foot search-and-rescue boat. The ocean energy tides power batteries for electric use.

The new 70-foot wind turbine will provide electrical power to homes where Coast Guard crew members and their families live.
