Unemployment rate down

The Maine Department of Labor says unemployment dropped by one-tenth of a percentage point to 8.1 percent.
April’s jobless rate is down from 8.2 percent in March.

State of Maine and MM&A Railway Agree to Mediation

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Surface Transportation Board (STB) announced that the State of Maine and the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway have agreed to confidential mediation conducted by the STB. As part of the terms of the mediation, all official proceedings in the abandonment case, including the field hearing that had been scheduled for May 10 in Presque Isle, will be postponed.

Seth Wescott wins his second Olympic gold medal in the snowboard cross.

“All of Maine is proud of Seth,” said Governor Baldacci after congratulating the Olympian. “For the second time, he has proven that he is the best in the world at snowboard cross. Seth helped to introduce the world to his sport in Turin, and the race this year was a thriller from start to finish. But we’re proud of Seth for more than his gold-medal performance. He’s active in his community and sets a high standard for the way he conducts his life.”

Wescott won the gold medal during the snowboard cross in Vancouver.

AUGUSTA – Governor John E. Baldacci today unveiled an improved version of the State Web page dedicated to the federal Recovery Act. Through the enhanced site, http://www.MaineRecovery.gov, Mainers can access up-to-date information about where and how federal recovery funds are dispersed.

“Maine people expect and deserve access on the impact of the Recovery Act,” said Governor Baldacci. “This improved Web page provides clear information about how the funds will be spent in a user-friendly format.”
