A Northeast Permaculture Convergence Workshop in 2008
This year, the Sixth Annual Northeast Permaculture Convergence will be held July 2nd-4th; the convergence will feature tours of farms and homesteads on Friday, July 2nd, and workshops, live music, camping and family events over the weekend.
“There is a growing interest in organic, local, fair-trade, climate-neutral and zero-waste everything – people want alternatives and permaculture offers solutions,” says Jim Merkel, Co-director of the Newforest Institute of Brooks Maine.

Saturday, June 12, 2010, top retired military leaders and veterans, along with local elected officials, will host a Town Hall meeting to discuss the connection between climate change and national security, and call for passage of comprehensive climate and energy legislation. They will encourage Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) and Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) to stop funding terrorism and defend America by supporting the American Power Act. The veterans will also underscore previous efforts by both Senators to secure America with clean energy.

For the first time in American history insurance coverage has become the right of every U.S. citizen, legally.
The new health care law takes also a number of steps, similar to ones already taken in Maine, to crack down on some of the worst insurance industry practices. The bill gives patients and doctors more control over health decisions, not insurance companies, and ends practices like denying coverage for pre-existing conditions, dropping patients when they become sick and imposing limits on health care coverage.
