On Sunday, May 19th, dogs and their owners will gather at Bug Light Park in South Portland for the first annual American Cancer Society Bark for Life of Greater Portland, a unique event to remember and honor both dogs and people touched by cancer. Funds raised through Bark For Life support local programs and services offered by the American Cancer Society, as well as educational initiatives, and life-saving research in Maine, New England and beyond.

CEO of Associated General Contractors Departs to Open Consulting Firm

John O’Dea has left his position as Chief Executive Officer at Associated General Contractors of Maine, effective at the end of June. O’ Dea departed the trade association to open his own firm, Barracuda East, specializing in research, strategic intelligence, and risk management for corporations, developers and investors in infrastructure and energy projects. Barracuda East opened its doors on July 2.
“Associated General Contractors of Maine is a tremendous organization,” said O’Dea. “The members are doing everything they can to create good paying jobs for hard working people throughout Maine while building the civil infrastructure upon which we all depend. I enjoyed working with everyone at AGC, but I also think that now is a good time for me to move forward with a diverse group of clients in a variety of areas. My experience with AGC and my activity priority to that have helped us identify an opportunity to serve clients with public policy, regulatory and advocacy needs.”

Do you ever wonder how much rainfall you received from a recent thunderstorm? How about snowfall during a winter storm? If so, then a new volunteer weather observing program needs your help! The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow network, or CoCoRaHS, is looking for new volunteers across Maine and New Hampshire. The grassroots effort is part of a growing national network of home-based and amateur rain spotters with a goal of providing a high density precipitation network that will supplement existing observations.

The Maine Compost Team at the University of Maine Forestry and Agricultural Experiment Station at Highmoor Farm in Monmouth is offering a two-day composting workshop June 28-29 for staff and teachers at educational institutions around the state and beyond.
Participants will learn how to make use of recyclable, organic school waste materials and plant school gardens. The workshop provides an opportunity to learn how to close the circle between food and waste in schools, according to UMaine Extension Professor Mark Hutchinson, who will lead the course.

Maine Standard Biofuels is sending a truck and trailer to Alabama to provide relief to the tornado victims.
Drop off times for goods: Thursday from 10-6, Friday from 10-6, Saturday from 8-3, Sunday from 8-3.
They need toiletry items, dry pet food, can-openers, non-perishables, charcoal, moving boxes and packing tape, and bottled water. Oakhurst Dairy and Hannaford are supporting this trip and we would welcome any donation you are able to afford! Please check back and call if you have any questions. I am leaving Tuesday night and need to be completely loaded by Monday night.
