“I am extremely pleased that USDA Rural Development was able to provide the funding to assist the Northern Maine Development Commission to continue the important work of the Aroostook County Empowerment Zone, including strategic planning, community building, and economic and business development for this vital rural region of Maine, said USDA Rural Development State Director Virginia Manuel.

Congressman Mike Michaud has been a long time advocate of the Empowerment Zone.

“The Empowerment Zone program is an important part of the economic development of Aroostook County,” said Michaud. “The USDA has consistently provided rural Maine communities with resources and opportunities for economic expansion and development. This funding for the Aroostook County Empowerment Zone will contribute greatly to the economic development plans for the region.”

Rural Development funds will be used to assist Northern Maine Development Commission in the implementation and oversight of the Strategic Plan, including building community participation, ownership and partnerships, and attracting financial support from local state, federal, and foundation sources to fully implement the Strategic Plan over a 10-year period.
